Who knew!?
The usual, beaten-path approach to aquaponics is tilapia and something like lettuce as a vegetable.
Back in the day when this directory was “Vancouver Aquaponics,” we used to keep posting tilapia suppliers and Canadian locals had a hard time getting fingerlings for their systems.
Apparently there were issues with governmental regulations around keeping these foreign little critters, even though nearly any tilapia system in British Columbia would have to be indoors – updates on the situation coming soon!
Tilapia Lack Nutritional Value
Meanwhile, researching the nutritional benefits of tilapia can result in a big sigh and a shrug, as tilapia are about the least nutritious fish available for human consumption…
… which begs the question …
Why not something DELICIOUS?!
Freshwater Crabs, Lobsters, Crayfish, Shrimp
Lobsters, crabs, and shrimp are generally ocean-faring crustaceans, but there are freshwater varieties which can be raised in an aquaponics system.
Who knew!?
If anyone has ever eaten a FRESHWATER crustacean, please weigh-in on this – I have only had crustaceans from the ocean.
Here are a few links to crustacean aquaponics resources – the lettuce is another matter!
